DTE Energy Unveils Solar-Powered Trash Compactors

The utility is installing seven solar-powered trash compactors and recycling bins around its campus in downtown Detroit.

A new effort led by DTE Energy aims to make Detroit a cleaner and greener city. The utility is installing solar-powered trash compactors and recycling bins for public use. Amy Joyce is the Director of Facility Operations at DTE Energy. She says the new waste management system will help reduce collection costs and energy by notifying custodians through connected technologies.

“It can send a signal to a phone, to a laptop, whatever. It’s an app, basically. It will tell you when its about to be full or when it is full and ready to be emptied.

Joyce says DTE Energy is testing seven units around its offices. She says the company will evaluate the success of the solar-powered trash compactors, following the initial pilot period.
