U-M to Notify Parents of Students with Repeat Alcohol, Drug Offenses

The University of Michigan will now notify parents of students with repeated alcohol or drug offenses.

Starting this school year, the University of Michigan will notify parents of first year students who repeatedly commit alcohol and drug offenses.

The program focuses on students under 21-years-old who have committed violations accompanied by harmful behavior.

Wellness Director Mary Jo Desprez says the initiative will be evaluated at the end of the school year.

“That’s why it is very intentionally a pilot program, is to make sure we are looking at what were the outcomes, were we successful and is it something that should be adopted or implemented more formally,” she says.

Desprez says the program’s goal is to promote safety and well-being, not to punish students.
