Federal Grants Lower Costs of AP Testing for Low-Income Students

The Michigan Department of Education is receiving a federal grant to help pay for AP tests for low-income students.

The Michigan Department of Education is receiving a $512,926 federal grant to cover the costs of advanced placement tests for low-income students.

Spokesperson Bill Disessa says the funds will lower the test fee to $13. He says costs will be split between the state and the students.

“It’s very important in helping defray those costs to low-income families who perhaps could not afford this exam,” Disessa says. “A lot of families just to make ends meet can’t afford you know a $91 per exam fee.”

Disessa says the department also has funds set aside to help with payment assistance. He says the grant will help pay for 13,500 tests this school year.
