Southwest Detroit Discusses New Plans for Historic Fort Wayne

Historic Fort Wayne subject of renovation talk as the Gordie Howe Bridge nears development.

Officials in southwest Detroit are discussing plans to revive Historic Fort Wayne. As the state prepares to build its new Gordie Howe Bridge near the site of the former military base, the fort is becoming the focus of several economic and cultural proposals. Detroit City Council member Raquel Castañeda-López says the community has many ideas to enrich the site.

“Potential petting zoos or a historical museum to honor Native Americans as well as veterans and the significance of that military history.”

Castañeda-López says a consulting group will consider the various ideas as they draft plans for Fort Wayne’s future. She says the improvements would help create a vibrant riverfront area that would also include Riverside Park.
