Farmington Public Schools Layoff List Grows to 231

Employees with the Farmington Public School system may find themselves out of work next fall. The school is cutting 231 teachers, administrators and staff. Many will be offered a voluntary severance package in the form of a five-year annuity plan. Kathy Smith is the Executive Director of Human Resources for Farmington Hills Public Schools. She says the district will revisit the layoffs once the school year begins.

When we see the results of the severance and also certainly our enrollment indicates that, we’ll be able to start working on recalls as soon as we can.”

District officials say they are anticipating 241 fewer students in the new school year. They say the layoffs reflect a school budget deficit of about $1.5 million.
