Wayne County Executive Warren Evans is proposing a one-time tax hike on property this summer.

The 1.23 mill increase would be used to pay a court-ordered $49 million into the county retirement fund. Evans spokesperson Lloyd Jackson says another option would be to pull money from the Delinquent Revolving Tax Fund, but that could prolong the County Executive’s recovery plan.

“It also actually is an issue with the jail site as well,” Jackson says. “Because as the CEO looks for ways to solve the jail site issue it’s the county’s ability to borrow money that’s tied to the county’s financial health.”

Several Wayne County Commissioners are opposed to the millage increase.
