A new study by the auto club AAA’s foundation finds that nearly two-thirds of people injured or killed in a crash involving a teen driver are passengers, not the teen behind the wheel.

This report comes as what the foundation calls the 100 Deadliest Days begin, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when teen crash fatalities climb dramatically.

AAA Michigan Spokesperson Susan Hiltz says there are more teenagers on the roads during the summer than at other times of the year.

“In 2013 alone, 371,000 people were injured and close to 3,000 were killed in crashes,” Hiltz says.  “So there are really alarming statistics that really encourages that parents need to talk to their kids about safe driving.”

Hiltz says parents should increase the time they spend with teens behind the wheel during driver’s education classes and ensure young motorists are fully aware of the laws governing roadways.
