AAA considers Thursday the start of the Memorial Day weekend. The auto club says drivers will pay fuel prices that are almost $1 a gallon cheaper than they were a year ago. But prices have been creeping up this week. The average price in Michigan is $2.74 a gallon, 13 cents higher than it was on May 14. Industry analyst Patrick DeHaan of GasBuddy.com tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller the price of oil started rising in March. He adds that while prices have risen this week, they don’t always go up before a major holiday.
