Shepard Fairey Makes Detroit His Canvas

This month, Detroit becomes a canvas for a high-profile graffiti artist. Shepard Fairey, known for his iconic graphic designs, will paint what some are calling his largest mural ever in Detroit’s downtown. Angela Wisniewski is a member of an artists group, called the Library Street Collective. She says Fairey is a major figure in the art world, known for his portrayal of a particularly large former pro-wrestler.

He’s kind of a pioneer street art guy. From his Andre the Giant thing that began in the ‘80s and became a huge movement. I think what really launched him into a mainstream artist category would be his “HOPE” poster for Obama.

Wisniewski says Fairey will exhibit his art in two separate galleries in Detroit. She says the events take place later this month.
