It’s not that Brooklyn-based musician Kaki King was tired of simply playing guitar, it’s more that she wanted her guitar to be an instrument of visual artistry as well as music.
With a special “skin” on her white guitar and a screen behind her, her performances on her current “The Neck is a Bridge to the Body” tour include projections of colors, shapes, photographs and video coordinated with her solo playing.
“There’s going to be a lot of light, a lot of color and a lot of music,” King says. “There’s everything. The thing that unites it is guitar.”
King performs at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the Max M. Fisher Music Center at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Doors open at 6 p.m. for food and drinks before the performance. Tickets are $15.
