A city-wide Detroit clean-up program kicked off today. The annual effort, called “Motor City Makeover,” provides volunteers resources like dumpsters and garbage pick-up to beautify their neighborhoods. District One Manager Stephanie Young says participants work around their homes, schools and churches.

“Volunteers can do pretty much whatever they’d like to do. So on their block, say there’s an abandoned house and they want to go and clean up around that house and make it beautiful for the neighbors, then that’s what they’ll do. There are some people that are going and cleaning along freeway lines. There are those that are sprucing up neighborhood parks. It’s really open to your imagination.”

Young says about eight-thousand people took part in the program last year. She says the clean-up events are scheduled for the first three Saturdays in May.
