Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is proposing plans to preserve the city’s Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center.

The proposed redevelopment would include building a restaurant and office space for community programs in the center. Duggan says the building will honor the legacies of Joe Louis –who trained there—and Leon Wheeler…the facility’s first black recreation worker.

“As we build the new city it is important that we remember our history and celebrate it,” he says.

Duggan says as many as 150 residential units would also be built on the southern half of the property.

The plan must be approved by the Detroit City Council.
