The Public Interest Research Group in Michigan, or PIRGIM, is asking the Governor to reconsider expanding the I-94 Highway. The state plans to add more lanes to I-94 to eliminate congestion on a seven-mile stretch.

26th District Representative Jim Townsend attended the protest. He says investing in alternative solutions, such as adding mass transit, would be a better use of money.

Why have we been struggling so much over the last decades now to raise the resources we need to create a world class transportation system in this state?” Townsend says.  ”And I think one of the reasons is this very project.”

Townsend says the project stems from outdated thinking that more roads will fix congestion. He says the last the thing the state should be doing is adding more roads when there isn’t enough money to maintain them.
