Survey Suggests Michigan Moose Population Declining
About 100 fewer moose were counted in Michigan than in 2013.
A recent survey shows Michigan’s moose population is declining. The state’s Department of Natural Resources’ survey found 100 fewer of the animals now than in 2013. State Moose Management Specialist Chad Stewart says the survey results are not conclusive, but other states are experiencing similar trends.
“Minnesota, Vermont, and Maine have been documenting some declines in their populations. So, you know, unfortunately it seems to be a concern, or a trend, in moose at this sort of latitude, which is the southern edge of their range.”
Stewart says it’s the smallest number of moose recorded in Michigan since 2006. He says, prior to this year’s survey, Michigan’s moose population had been increasing, or at least remaining stable.
