Detroit artists can now apply for a grant from the Knight Arts Challenge. The Knight Foundation began the grant program two years ago, when it pledged more than $19 million to the arts in Detroit. Since then, the challenge has awarded almost $5 million to more than an hundred projects. There’s $3 million dollars available this year. WDET’s Pat Batcheller spoke with Knight Arts Challenge Program Director Katy Locker and artist Alise Alousi, one of the first grant recipients. Alousi used her grant to bring an exhibit of art inspired by a deadly bombing in Baghdad to the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn. Locker says the goal is to enrich the city through art.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation helps fund the Detroit Journalism Cooperative, of which WDET is a member. The Knight Arts Challenge is also currently underwriting traffic reports on WDET.
