Detroit Firm Plans to Bring Water Taxis to Riverfront

Marissa Gawel/WDET

Detroit could soon have water taxis available to move people along the city’s riverfront. Detroit firm Freshwater Transit Services is developing plans for a trolley bus service and river taxis connecting Belle Isle with the Ambassador Bridge. Company President Tom Choske says he hopes the project will increase tourism, and change residents’ minds about public transportation.

We want to show people that’s there a lot of misconceptions about public transit, especially locally, and that it can really be something that is fast, efficient, safe, and can improve the quality of life for everyone, even people who may use a car very frequently.”

Choske says the taxis and buses would be integrated with Detroit bus service, the People Mover, and the M1 rail system. He says his company is working to gather stakeholders to move the transit proposal forward.
