Detroit city officials make big decisions during public meetings every day—but the vast majority receive no media coverage and produce minimal records. Interested in learning how to keep tabs on the latest education decisions? Want to know more about Detroit’s newest charter commission or what’s up with land use in the city? Join Detroit’s Documenters program and get trained and paid to hold your local government accountable!

This two-hour workshop will introduce you to the Documenters community through an overview of Detroit’s civic landscape and focus on how to live-tweet a meeting. Join us to participate in skill-based exercises designed to help you source verifiable information, fact-check your work and understand your rights through Open Meetings law. These are core skills that can be used on a range of Documenter assignments that pay $16 an hour.

Our community-building workshop will conclude with a review activity to make sure you feel ready to document. Once you complete the activity you’ll be eligible to apply for paid assignments. You’ll check in and access the activity on Documenters.org, so bring a device/account log in such as a cell phone or laptop.

CAPACITY for this training is 30 participants—create an account and register at Documenters.org for ONE of the trainings.

ABOUT THE DETROIT DOCUMENTERS PROGRAM

The Detroit Documenters collective is a project from City Bureau, WDET 101.9FM, CitizenDetroit and Outlier Media that explores what it means to keep an eye on your local government.

Documenters are citizens and civic actors; creators and collaborators; representing a broad base of intergenerational, diverse communities. This project is based on the Chicago-based Documenters program run by City Bureau. City Bureau’s Documenters program recruits, trains and pays this group of highly engaged citizens to participate in the newsgathering process and contribute to a communal pool of knowledge.

Together we’re democratizing news & information at the local level. To learn more and sign up to be a Documenter, visit www.documenters.org
