President Joe Biden has formally announced his bid for reelection in 2024. While Biden has several accomplishments to tout from his first term, such as passing legislation like the CHIPS and Science Act and the Infrastructure Reduction Act, his age remains a concern for some commentators.

At 80 years old, President Biden is America’s oldest president and would be 86 at the end of a second term. But are concerns about his age valid or overblown?

E.J. Dionne Jr. is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, syndicated columnist for the Washington Post, and university professor in the Foundations of Democracy and Culture at Georgetown University. He says the President’s reelection bid helps Democrats avoid a potentially divisive primary campaign that could tear the party apart.

“I think Joe Biden has shown that he is the one figure who can kind of sit over the party’s of divisions,” says Dionne.
