Michigan’s health department has confirmed that Wayne County’s juvenile jail is under investigation.

The Detroit Free Press reports the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is looking into seven complaints. Wayne County commissioners called for quick and drastic action in September over conditions at the jail.

The facility has been criticized for its lockdown rules and for low staffing levels. The county has said that the average daily population at the jail was 80 before the pandemic but housed around 128 individuals last week.

County officials have asked the state to use the William Dickerson Detention Facility in Hamtramck which does not currently house any inmates.
