Mass shooting leaves 2 dead, 6 injured on Detroit’s west side

Detroit Police Department press conference addressing the shooting that left 2 dead, 6 injured on Detroit's west side.

Six people are injured and two people are dead following a mass shooting on Detroit’s west side early Sunday morning.

Police say the incident – on Coyle near Plymouth – had to do with a dispute between neighbors and a car blocking a driveway. A suspect was taken into custody without incident by Detroit police.

The two people killed were a 39-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man.

DPD Chief James White says the suspect – a man with a military background in his 30s – was well-armed.

“They recovered 11 weapons — again, 11 weapons — from this home that were strategically placed throughout the home so as he moved through the home he would have access to these weapons.”

White says people need to find solutions to problems without using violence.

“The levels of crime that we’re seeing in our city is unacceptable,” White stated. “This country’s obsession with weapons and mass shootings. And it’s just unacceptable and we can do better and we have to do better. And I’m not going to get on a political platform about guns. It’s not about guns. It’s about using guns to make poor choices and poor decisions that we’ve seen.”

It was a violent weekend in Detroit – with seven people killed and 24 more injured in a string of shootings around the city.
