THANKSGIVING

9 a.m. – 10 a.m. and 7 p.m to 8 p.m.: Aging in Community
Within a decade, America will be looking different. In addition to other demographic changes, 70 million Baby Boomers are now entering their retirement years. For the first time in history, there will be more older adults than children. This huge societal change will affect how families provide eldercare, how older Americans access transportation, and whether people can age in their own homes among neighbors they know — and avoid nursing facilities, where about 30% of COVID-19 deaths occurred. These shifts will accelerate a trend that began three decades ago with passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act: local communities are attempting to become more age-friendly. What changes will this mean for how families relate, how our streets and sidewalks are designed, how we use technology? In Aging in Community, a special project from Humankind public radio, you’ll hear stories of transition and dignity — and meet people who are showing the way.

Noon – 1 p.m.: Milk Street Thanksgiving Special
Get ready for Thanksgiving with some help from our friends. Cheryl Day answers holiday baking questions, Sam Fore cooks Thanksgiving with a Sri Lankan take, J. Kenji López-Alt shares why he eats lobster for Thanksgiving, Dan Pashman tells how to eat pie the right way, and we learn to make Yogurt-Roasted Carrots with Warm Spices.

1 p.m. – 2 p.m.: Sporkful Thanksgiving is For Eaters
“Thanksgiving Is For Eaters” is an entertaining combination of in-studio interviews, listener calls, and in-kitchen segments. You’ll learn useful tips about how to make classic Thanksgiving dishes, interesting facts about the science of cooking and the art of eating, and surprising details about the ways in which diverse cultures have adapted Thanksgiving traditions and made them their own.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26

9 a.m. – 10 a.m.: Climate One Hour on the Climate Summit
Climate One presents empowering conversations that connect all aspects of the climate crisis — the scary and the exciting, the individual and the systemic. Delegates from across the globe have just met in Glasgow for the international climate summit known as COP26, with the hope of strengthening commitments to keep emissions targets at that 1.5 degree level. After two weeks of negotiations, presentations and protests in Glasgow, COP26 is a wrap. This morning, on a Climate One special, find out what was achieved – and what wasn’t – at the summit.

Noon – 2 p.m.: Don Was Motor City Playlist
Tune in for a special presentation of WDET’s newest original music show, hosted by Blue Note Records President, Don Was.
