Local musician Ryan Neal took a roundabout path to producing music.
“I was into sports before, [music] was the first thing I was able to sit down with myself and be determined to get better at,” says Neal.
Neal has long entertained the idea of secluding himself to record music, and started looking at Airbnb’s to find a place. Michigan was too expensive, so he turned his attention to place slightly further: Nova Scotia.
“It was a house in the middle of the forest, like five minutes from the ocean,” says Neal. He spent three months producing music in solitude.
The result is the EP “Up My Sleeve,” a title he had in his head for years and a song he wrote in a weekend. Neal spoke with Essential Music host, Ann Delisi, about that process, going from sports to playing the guitar and the physical challenges he faced before becoming a teenager.
