First Fridays at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

The First Fridays series is an art walk in Ypsilanti on the first Friday of each month where various venues of the city open their doors and invite folks in for various cultural events including art exhibitions, poetry, or live music. One of the stops on this particular First Friday will be St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Art by Nate Hockman is on display, and you get to hear the distinctive voices of singer/songwriters Joel Parkilla, Jim Cherewick, and a quartet called Virga, who combine a bit of neo-psychedelic ambient noise-pop with surf-rock.

Duende! with Beat Circus, The Gashounds at Outer Limits Lounge

Beat Circus is a Boston ensemble led by Brian Carpenter, who has an impressive resume of collaborations with experimental artists like Kronos Quartet, Colin Stetson and many more. They are a perfect match for Detroit’s Duende!, who have been around the scene for almost 14 years. They’re a swiss-army-knife of a band, with elements of psych-rock, punk, country, surf, and Americana-rock. The Gashounds are another local rock outfit that always finds some stellar tones and rich harmonies, and they round out this lineup at the Outer Limits Lounge.

The Detroit Local 2nd Anniversary Bash at PJ’s Lager House

The culture podcast “Detroit Local” celebrates its 2nd year in style with a full night at the Lager House featuring a live podcast taping at 7 pm and a concert at 9 pm. The performing artists will sit down with hosts Michael and Khary to talk about anything and everything before hopping onstage to perform. The lineup includes rap duo LXL, Detroit CYDI, emcee Goldzilla joining producer Eddie Logix, and Maryland based Height Keech with Detroit’s own Mister.

Brother Elsey at Otus Supply

Brother Elsey make epic-feeling, grand-scale, richly-rendered Americana-rock, ideal for road trips, spring, summer, and sunshine. The band is comprised of Jack Stablein and his two twin brothers, Beau and Brady Stablein. The brothers have been making music together since they were kids. That means their harmonies are dazzlingly synced up, as well as their shared sensibilities for creating a catchy melody, and a lot of urgency and energy behind their rhythms and solos.
