As some states begin to liberalize cannabis laws, many of the same states are further restricting access to tobacco.

California, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Oregon have raised their minimum tobacco sale age to 21. Hundreds of local governments around the country have done the same.

Now, there are some people here in Michigan that say the Mitten state should follow suit. Should we?

Cliff Douglas is the director of the University of Michigan Tobacco Research Network, the American Cancer Society vice president for tobacco control, and director of the ACS Tobacco Control Center.

State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud is a Democrat from Dearborn representing Michigan’s 15th state House district. He sponsored legislation last term to raise the tobacco age in Michigan to 21 years old.

Douglas and Hammoud join Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about raising the age for tobacco.
