Flat Rock’s Ford Mustang Was World’s Best-Selling Sports Car in 2016

The Mustang saw sales gains in Germany and China last year.

A vehicle produced in Metro Detroit has become the world’s best-selling sports car.

Ford says its Mustang now holds that title.

The automaker says international markets played a large role in the muscle car’s sales growth last year.

Mark Schaller is the marketing manager for the Mustang.

He says international sales took off after Ford started offering a right hand drive version of the car in 2015.

Schaller says, “This is the first time we’ve truly exported the car globally.”

“Since launching the 2015 Mustang, we’ve exported just about 400,000 Mustangs worldwide – all built out of the Michigan Flat Rock Assembly Plant,” he says.

Schaller says the Flat Rock facility exports about 20% of all the Mustangs it makes.

He says the additional global sales are also having an emotional impact on local workers.

Schaller says, “Everyone down at Flat Rock Assembly Plant is very proud to build the Mustang.  They’re very proud of what they do.”
