With the nice weather also comes a new season of films hitting theaters.

Summer usually bring big action films, superhero movies, and other popcorn flicks.

Detroit Today explores those films set for release in 2017, as well as some of the films that may resonate a bit longer if you check them out at the Detroit Film Theater at the DIA.

Longtime Detroit radio personality Bill McAllister talks with Elliot Wilhelm, curator of film at the DIA and director of the Detroit Film Theatre, about what’s coming up at DFT.

A Quiet Passion is a new biopic about the life of poet Emily Dickenson starring Cynthia Nixon, screening this weekend at the Midtown Detroit theater.

“She… had to live in a time in which simply expressing herself could often get her into serious trouble,” says Wilhelm. “It’s about the struggle to be creative”

DFT is also screening Detroit Home Movies, a project showcasing home movies from Detroit made around 1967. Screenings are happening at the theater from now until the end of July.

To get a sense of what’s playing at your local Megaplex theater, McAllister turns to film critic and screen writer Jeff Meyers

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two is going to be a juggernaut,” says Meyers. “The first one made three-quarters of a billion dollars… And it’s the one that kind of kicks everything off. It opens May 5th.”

Meyers says he’s surprised about one aspect of this summer schedule: It’s relatively light on sequels — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 notwithstanding.
