Kasich Supporter Vows to Avoid GOP Convention, ‘Incendiary’ Trump
Kasich surrogate U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent says Trump camp, RNC trying to woo him, other backers to help unify convention.
WDET is examining issues at the Republican National Convention getting underway this week in Cleveland.
It’s a gathering a former GOP presidential candidate, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, said he looked forward to when he campaigned for Michigan’s March primary election.
Kasich predicted he, not Donald Trump, would dominate the convention.
“And if I win Ohio he’s not gonna be the nominee,” Kasich said then. “We’re gonna go to the convention, I’m gonna be the nominee. ‘Cause I don’t know if you noticed this or not but it’s being held in Ohio. We plotted this all out. Ha!”
But Donald Trump is the presumed Republican nominee. And Kasich now vows to avoid the convention, planning instead to hold a series of separate events elsewhere in Cleveland.
Party leaders are still trying to woo Kasich supporters to unify behind Trump’s expected nomination.
But Kasich surrogate and Republican U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter this week’s convention is not a place for him or anyone else who backed the Ohio governor.
