Crew of USS Detroit Visits City Council

Captain of naval warship bearing the city’s name addressed city leaders.

U.S. Navy

The Captain of the USS Detroit addressed the Detroit City Council Tuesday.

The warship is scheduled to be commissioned on the Detroit River later this year. The USS Detroit is the sixth U-S Navy ship to bear the city’s name.

Captain Mike Desmond says it’s appropriate for this resurging city — called the ‘Arsenal of Democracy’ during World War Two — to lend its name to this modern ship.

“It really is the fastest ship in the navy, the most agile, one of the most complex ships,” Desmond said.

The ship will travel to Detroit from Wisconsin…where it was built…for the commissioning ceremony. Its permanent home will be in San Diego.
