New Report Finds Metro Detroit Roads are Fourth Worst in the Country

56-percent of the pavement in Metro Detroit is in poor condition.

A non-profit transportation group says more than half of Metro Detroit’s main roads are in poor condition. As part of an annual report, the research group TRIP ranks the region’s roadways as the fourth worst in the nation. TRIP Policy and Research Director Rocky Moretti says a recent increase in travel is making the situation worse.

“It just means there’s going to be even greater deteriorating on the region’s roads and bridges, and makes it that much more critical that the area and really the whole state of Michigan begins to catch up on this backlog of needed improvements.”

-Rocky Moretti, TRIP Policy and Research Director

Moretti says improving streets is often far less expensive than what motorists spend to fix a vehicle damaged from traveling on bad roads. He says poor pavement conditions in Metro Detroit cost the average resident about $900 each year.
