Numerous Recalls Could Impact Union Talks with Automakers

Automakers are dealing with a seemingly huge number of recalls in a year when they’ll negotiate new union contracts.

After being blasted recently by Congress for being too lax in enforcing regulations the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now appears ready to take a much tougher stance regarding how automakers recall vehicles.

That includes possibly heavily penalizing General Motors for waiting decades to recall cars with defective ignition switches.

The sanctions could come later this year, just as Detroit’s Big Three are embroiled in contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union.

Organized labor expert Harley Shaiken tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter the government’s new hard line on recalls could help shape the next union contracts.
