On Being Presents: Becoming Detroit

January 20, 2012

becoming detroit

"We asked the pressing questions about the pain behind the mantras of “possibility” and “opportunity.” None of them dismissed those ideas; rather, they embrace those contradictions and continue to move forward and insist their reality is one worth recognizing too."

- Trent Gilliss ( Senior Editor, On Being)

Krista Tippett and the On Being team visit East Detroit and speak with Chinese-American philosopher and civil rights legend Grace Lee Boggs. They present a Detroit story that does not often make it into the news - a story of a place where neighbors are reimagining work, food, and the very meaning of humanity. Through Grace's story and the work of others at the Boggs Center, we learn about community gardens and home rehabilitation not only in economic terms, but as a way of envisioning possibility within ourselves.

On Being airs Friday's at 3pm and Sundays at 7am and 10pm on WDET.
