For the Love of Mink!

At the tender age of 19, I remember taking a friend to see the 25th anniversary re-release of “Pink Flamingos” in 1997. He was unprepared for what was about to unfold and bolted from the theatre at one point do the nature of the film. Still today I believe he was kind of traumatized by John Waters’ masterpiece of satire.

For those who have seen “Pink Flamingos”, no explanation is necessary. For those who haven’t, let’s just say it pokes fun at people who seek fame at any cost as Divine and the Marbles face off to claim the title of “the filthiest people alive”.

Beyond a great performance by Divine, the other star who shines brightly in “Pink Flamingos” is Mink Stole. As Connie Marble, with her shock of red hair, the baby mill she runs with her degenerate husband and her constant desire to win, Mink is very funny and brilliant.

From there Mink went on to star in other films by John Waters as one of his “dreamlanders” – the revolving cast of actors he’s worked with over years. Her other films with Waters include “Female Trouble” and “Desperate Living”. Mink even holds her own opposite Oscar nominated actress Kathleen Turner in “Serial Mom”.

Recently, while trolling Facebook, I came across something fun for a Mink fan like me: a Kickstarter to assist Mink in recording her first CD, “Do Re Mink”.

Kickstarters are nothing new around these parts. As you know, they raised almost $70,000 that way to put a Robocop statue in Detroit.

But, this crowd funding is pretty interesting because of the premiums. Beyond copies of the CD for those who give, that’s kind of obvious, there are several other things Mink Stole is willing to give in appreciation. Let’s look at some of the more interesting "gifts" on the list:

• Mink's famous hand-crocheted potholders in the colors of your choice (subject to availability)

• Mink will learn to text, and will text ten people of your choice, telling them what a great person you are and how much she likes you (or anything else you want her to say).

• A 20-minute Skype session with Mink.

• Mink will record the outgoing message of your choice on your phone or answering machine.

• Mink will marry you. That is, in her official capacity as the Reverend Nancy Paine Stoll of the Universal Life Church, Mink will officiate at your wedding.

• Mink and her Wonderful Band will play the CD for you live in your home or the venue of your choice.

How’s that for a “thank you” list? Not bad, huh? See, try as he might, the Robocop statue will not marry you or come to your house and rock out!

But in the end, remember that supporting Mink is very much like supporting WDET. You don’t give for the gifts. You give because you care about the idea, the things are they are trying to achieve and want to be a part of it.

And after hearing a clip of Mink’s jazzy first single – “I Wish I Had a Gun” – I have to say, I’m happy to throw a few dollars in.

Let me know if you do... or is there another Kickerstarter out there I should know about? What have you helped to fund recently?

CHEERS!
