Every few weeks, WDET features a regional arts and culture non-profit doing critical work in the city. This time WDET’s STAR initiative brings you Urban Stringz II, a youth ensemble and summer camp its Director Cecilia Sharpe says is an off shoot of a regularly gigging Detroit group.
She says the mission of Urban Stringz II is to enhance student's musical talents and abilities in addition to exposing them to this culturally rich and diverse society of ours. "We recognize the tremendous value exposure to music education plays in helping to form and shape the foundation of the lives of young people, and we are dedicated to helping children express themselves one note at a time. Our goal is to "Transform Children One Note At A Time" by offering a fun and educational music experience. Our Urban Stringz II participants are taught to believe in themselves and to reach for excellence in whatever they seek to achieve."
The Urban Stringz Summer Camp runs from JULY 24 thru AUGUST 4. They are currently accepting applications and registration fees for Urban Stringz II Summer Camp, which is held at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History Tuesday thru Saturday from 9:00 AM - to 2:30 PM Camp includes orchestral training, private classes, fields trips, and a guest artist workshop.
Students are served breakfast and lunch and are encouraged to exercise and socialize during recess. Students showcase their talent with a performance on the last day of camp -- August 4th at 12:00 PM. Parents, friends, and the community are invited to join us for this concert.
