The Progressive Underground: Show 46

On this weekend's installment of The Progressive Underground, we profile the iconic Nat Morris and talk about his days as host of the legendary dance show THE SCENE. We also play music that was bumped on THE SCENE and some of the electro/techno that was inspired by it as well as the best in electronica, future soul, nu-jazz, chill wave, b-sides and rare groove.

We air from 8-11 pm, Sunday, May 19 on 101.9 FM WDET and wdet.org.

THE SCENE BIO

The Scene was one of the hottest TV shows in Detroit back in the 70s and 80s and aired on Channel 62 WGPR-TV. It was THE show Motown into Geektown fives days a week from 1975 - 1987. Host Nat Morris (Captain Geek himself), introduced several iconic catch phrases during the course of the show's run such as "Are you ready to throw down," "Sugar is sugar, salt is salt, if you didn't get off today, it ain't our fault," and "What's the name of this town - Geektown."

The show also broke many acts who would go on to have legendary careers such as Phylis Hyman, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Prince, and many others.

But it was the dancers who became local celebrities and who would often steal the show. The Scene featured such memorable dancers as Cheryl Peoples, Lawanda, Moses, Fast Freddy, Montez, Yvonne, and Daphne Andrews who created and popularized many of the local dance crazes.

Looking back, many pundits view THE SCENE as Detroit's answer to Soul Train or American Bandstand, but better because it spotlighted everything Detroit stood for - music, dance, grit and style. And the man with the mic, Nat Morris deftly orchestrated the show despite many internal fiscal and creative challenges from the network.

We interview Nat and find out what made THE SCENE so magical, how he created the show's memorable taglines and what the ultimate legacy of the series will be.
