The Craig Fahle Show

The Weekend the Wright Way: Weekend Entertainment Preview

Friday, March 9, 2011

Travis Wright joins Craig for his usual weekend update, revealing music happenings around Detroit, Ann Arbor and other local hot spots.

The High Strung, Matt Jones & the Reconstruction, Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms A well throughout local lineup, which is always welcomed. Matt Jones, traveling in from Ypsi, just put out a mini-doc of a live set in which he covers The High Strung’s “Guilt Is How I’m Built.” His bran of music is personal and visceral folk rock. As for the High Strung, well they’re one o f the most eclectic bands around town. They sound at once both new and old, both tight and frantic. They can pop, rock and soar. Ryan Allen is a prolific power popateer, with presence and perfunctory hooks. The Loving Touch. In Ferndale.

Robert Glasper Experiment at the Charles H Wright Museum GM Theatre Robert Glasper draws together his parallel passions for hip hop and jazz on his latest release, “Black Radio.” In addition to his formal jazz training, the pianist has long navigated the nebulous territory between the two genres – working with artists like Q-Tip, Kanye West, and Erykah Badu. He was just on Soundcheck with John Schafer, playing with the Grammy Award winning R&B singer Bilal. And Rob Reinhardt played a track that went over quite well at the listening party on Tuesday. 7 to 10 pm, $25, GM Theatre.

Amy Schumer at the Magic Bag Ms Schumer turned heads for so many reasons on a season of Last Comic Standing a few years back, and recent appearances on 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm have sustained the momentum, but when she pretty much stole the show at the Roast of Charlie Sheen, we finally started to remember her name, surpassing the purgatory of being “that one new cute comedian chick.” Congrats, Amy. Now show us what you really got! Shows at 7 & 10 $20

Lac la Belle & Orpheum Bell @ Trinity House, Livonia 8 pm Detroit Americana duo Lac La Belle featuring Jennie Knaggs and Nick Schillace will be performing with Ann Arbor’s Orpheum Bell. Both groups bring a unique and expansive approach to traditional American folk and roots music while blending in their own set of unique influences

Saturday: Fashion In Detroit Joe Faris (Project Runway contestant a while back) and Denise Illitch are celebrating the third annual Fashion In Detroit event, their campaign to pull together and exalt local fashioners. There will be several runway shows, trunk shows, music and cocktails and even some face time with the stars of the show. Soundboard from 7 to 10. year $25
