Thousands of Detroit Residents Face Water Shutoffs: Is Water a Human Right?

Monday, June 2, 2014

National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, Best-selling Canadian author and human rights activist, Maude Barlow, speaks with Craig Fahle about the thousands Detroit residents experiencing water shut-offs due to a new policy at Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. Barlow stresses in her blog canadians.org about how this will penalize those with low income, the elderly, primarily African Americans, and that two-thirds of the cut-offs involve children. "The shutoffs are already taking place, since the end of March, without warning", says Barlow. Barlow indicates that water is a basic human right and the possibility that Detroit could soon be fighting privatization of its water.
