The Vagina Monologues goes to the State Capital Stairs

Tuesday June 19, 2012

Representative Rashida H. Tlaib joined other representatives and Michigan actresses on the state capital stairs in Lansing to perform the Vagina Monologues on Monday. They did so in protest of Rep. Lisa Brown's banning from the House floor for using what some deem controversial and inappropriate remarks in a debate over recent abortion legislation. Rep. Tlaib speaks with Craig about the silencing of Lisa Brown by state house Republicans last Thursday and the protest on the state capital stairs that followed.

The bill surrounding the controversy, HB 5711 regulates abortion clinics and limits access to abortions. It is a three-part omnibus package. One of the three parts seeks to impose a ban on most abortions after twenty weeks. The twenty week ban has stirred emotions in Lansing, causing many to speak out against the legislation. Rep. Lisa Brown made a speech to the Michigan House criticizing the bill saying, "I have not asked you to adopt and adhere to my religious beliefs. Why are you asking me to adopt yours?" Rep. Brown then remarked, "And finally, Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina, but 'no' means 'no.'" Rep. Brown’s use of the “V-word” on the House floor has put both HB 5711 and her silencing in the national spotlight.
