With the Winter Olympics around the corner in Sochi, Russia, many people have been questioning how Russia will treat visiting athletes and spectators who are gay. What’s the history and context of Russia’s treatment of gay people? So many questions need to be answered before people flock to see the winter game. Is homophobia encouraged in Russian society? Are Russians culturally predisposed to be fearful of gay people? Or is homophobia embraced by the Russian government, but rejected by its citizens? Professor Aaron Retish from Wayne State University joins the show to talk about the past, present, and future of the gay community in Russia.
