Tuesday November 27, 2012

On today's show, Craig speaks with Michigan Public Radio Network Capital Bureau Chief Rick Pluta about the start of the lame duck session in Lansing. They discuss what's happening with right-to-work legislation and regional transit. Craig speaks with Emily Dievendorf, Director of Policy for Equality Michigan, about State House Bills HB5763 and HB5764. Both would significantly alter the rules for adoption agencies and according to Dievendorf, could potentially discriminate against certain families. The Michigan House of Representatives recently passed an indigent defense reform bill that would create a 14-member Michigan Indigent Defense Commission to monitor the performance of lawyers who represent low-income defendants. Craig speaks with the bills primary sponsor Rep. Tom McMillin(R-District 45) about how the bill came to be and how it will affect indigent defense in Michigan. Also, Craig is joined by Susan Reed, President of the Wayne County Criminal Defense Bar Association, James Samuels, President of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, and David Moran, Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Michigan's Michigan Innocence Clinic, to discuss the pros and cons of the bill. Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press sits down with Craig to discuss his new book, "Dave Bing: A Life of Challenge." Also, Craig speaks with Metro Parent's Julia Elliott about holiday spending and kids. How much is too much, when it comes to kids? Plus, holiday sibling rivalry - do you have to buy the same number of gifts for each child?
