Study: Michigan Charter Schools Rank Well

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

A recent report finds that compared to 22 Charter School states studied to date, Michigan charter school students outperform traditional public school students in yearly learning gains. Cindy Schumacher, Executive Director at The Governor John Engler Center for Charter Schools at Central Michigan University, joins Craig to discuss the latest research findings from Center for Research on Educational Outcomes at Stanford University.

CREDO at Stanford University’s Director Dr. Margaret Raymond said in a statement: “These findings show that Michigan has set policies and practices for charter schools and their authorizers to produce consistent high quality across the state. The findings are especially welcome for students in communities that face significant education challenges.”

CREDO also reports that over 27% of Michigan Charter School students attend Detroit Charter Schools. Detroit Charter School students gain an average three months of learning than the average Traditional Public School students, outperforming other Michigan Charter School students who gain about two months per year of learning, on average.

The study surveyed academic progress of 85,650 students from 273 charter schools and compared their test results to similar Traditional Public Schools in the region. View the January 2013 study at CREDO.
