Could Your Family Go Screen-Free?

Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Metro Parent's Executive Editor Julia Elliott joins Craig for a discussion about turning off, tuning out and going screen-free for one week. Listeners also call with their stories about going screen-free and the impact that technology has on modern families. In honor of Screen-Free Week, Metro Parent asked three families to forgo screens for one week. Amy Martin was one of the moms who participated in the challenge and calls in to recount her experience and how her children reacted. "They found so many other things to do, they played outside, read books and did the things that kids used to do," Martin explains to Craig and Julia Elliott.

Think your family could survive?

If you couldn't go for one week, Elliott suggests incorporating the screen-free idea into certain parts of the day, like dinner. "We only have so many hours in the day, and if we’re filling it with time in front of the screen," Elliott says that can often mean families are missing out on other things as a result.
