The Craig Fahle Show

Mentoring Young Men In DPS

Monday April 28, 2014

A group of Detroit residents and youth mentors join Craig for a panel discussion on what it takes to motivate male students in Detroit Public Schools to pursue higher education and professional careers. Guests include Mathematics Instructor at University of Michigan, Shawn Blanchard; Owner and Operator of iCare Spine and Rehabilitation Center and Reginald Smith, a member of OPrep Circle of Champions Board.

Forbes grew up attending DPS, and explains how visibility is a key factor in encouraging young people.

"If they don't see enough of us [professionals in minority groups], they will gravitate to what the media shows them. We have to show them there's not only a different way, but a more positive way."

Dr. Cecil Forbes

Blanchard says many, "don't even see anyone in their surroundings that have gone to college at all," and therefore do not have an idea of the options available to them.

A lot of kids don't even see anyone in their surroundings that have gone to college at all... not just their educators, not just their parents, but their cousins or a parent's friend."

"Many people ask, 'How do I get involved?' There are centers all around in these neighborhoods ... [the youth] will welcome you with open arms."
