Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel On Detroit Bankruptcy

Thursday, May 29, 2014

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel speaks with Craig about the county's approach to the region and the issues facing it. Hackel spoke Tuesday at the Mackinac Policy Conference.

He discusses the county's motto featured on billboards for this year's conference, "Macomb adds value to the Region," and "the Region adds value to Macomb."

"We have to start figuring out, how do we move forward on a parallel path while this bankruptcy is taking place?...Do we really understand [the assets] we have here and how do we leverage that together as opposed to it being just a Wayne County thing, Oakland County thing, Macomb or beyond?"" says Hackel.

Hackel says part of the problem in regard to Detroit's bankruptcy is lack of understanding about the financial issues the region faces because of it.

"My job is to try to get [Detroit retirees living in Macomb] to realize, my god, Detroit is extremely important to Macomb County," says Hackel.

In addition, Macomb needs to address the pressing problem of infrastructure and outstanding pension obligations, he says. The county is set to announce plans to approach retiree healthcare "soon."
