Rep. John Conyers May Be Disqualified

Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Zach Gorchow, editor of Gongwer. explains what could happen with Congressman John Conyers in the upcoming August primary.

Conyers is in a standoff with the Detroit City Clerk, who says he did not submit enough valid signatures to appear on the August primary ballot. Conyers handed in 2000 petition signatures, but 800 of those were thrown out for various reasons (such as non-authentic signatures, or non-registered voters).

The clerk says more than 300 additional signatures are invalid because they were collected by two people who were not themselves registered voters. Conyers’ camp contests the volunteers registered in December.

What will happen to Conyers for the August primary? Could he appear as an Independent on the general ballot, regardless of the outcome of the primary?
