Craig speaks with Wayne State University Lecturer Saeed Khan about the current tensions building in Iraq. Saeed tells Craig that the situation is getting worse by the day, in large part due to violence from the militant group, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The group has a stronghold in Syria within 60 kilometers of Baghdad, and Khan explains that the gains may appear sudden but the group's recent action has been years in the making.

“The pace of their advancement into Iraq has been really quick even by American standards,” says Khan.

The group's swift dissolution of several Iraqi military divisions and complete disregard for the border between Iraq and Syria, suggest a fluid approach to an attack that will likely grow to involve the entire region.
