Detroit Lawmaker: DIA Shouldn't Get Preferential Treatment

Thursday, May 22, 2014

Rep. Harvey Santana (D-Detroit) is on the House Committee on Detroit's Recovery and Michigan's future. He talks to Craig on how the DIA shouldn't get preferential treatment.

"How do you expect an 82-year-old person to appreciate a Van Gogh for 5 minutes when they got to look at an abandoned house all day long for the last ten years?"

Rep. Harvey Santana

Santana says he thinks the main misunderstanding with the DIA's role in the bankruptcy is that people believe selling the artwork and paying off creditors will increase the city's municipal credit rating.

He says legislators cannot get ahold of some of the large stakeholders affected by the grand bargain.

The State House approved a bill today banning renewal of the DIA's millage.
