On August 7th, the Detroit youth poetry slam team is going to Brave New Voices (BNV), the international youth poetry slam festival, held this year in Chicago, IL. Team members are participants in InsideOut Literary Arts Projects' Citywide Poets after school program and have spent years of work preparing for this opportunity. Detroit’s team placed #4 in the world at the 2011 Brave New Voices Competition. In 2012, the team was not able to attend due to lack of funds.

Craig talks with InsideOut's Nichole Christian and Citywide Poets coordinator Norene Cashen about the competition, and hears a performance of "Birds" from student Joseph Verge.

The Brave New Voices series is part of WDET's Summer of Kids. Learn how you can support the Detroit team and create new opportunities for local youth at wdet.org/kids.
