Who Really Designed Belle Isle?

May 09, 2014

A recent article by Detroit Historical Society Curator, Joel Stone, questions whether famed architect Frederick Olmsted was truly the one to design Detroit's beloved Belle Isle park. Among other things, Stone contends that the famous Scott Fountain on the west end of the island is an example of something that Olmsted lobbied against putting on the island. He says Olmsted is known to do some design work on the island but records also show another firm contracted to design at least part of the island. Craig ferrets out the facts with Stone and Belle Isle Conservancy Executive Director, Michelle Hodges.
