Cultural Historian Maria Elena Rodriguez On Cinco De Mayo and Misunderstood Mexican Cuisine

Friday, May 3, 2013

It’s Tres De Mayo, and preparations are being made in and out of the hispanic community for what has become the United State’s biggest Mexican holiday.

Maria Elena Rodriguez has been an advocate of Mexican Culture for decades. As the president of Mexicantown Community Development Corporation she co-created the Irish Mexican Fiesta and the district wide celebration of Day of the dead in Southwest Detroit. Maria Elena Rodriguez spoke to WDET’s Martina Guzman about expanding her love of culture by teaching Mexican cooking classes that come with a history lesson.
