On August 7th Detroit’s youth poetry slam team travels to Chicago for Brave New Voices-- the international youth poetry slam festival. Team members are participants in the Citywide Poets after-school program run by the InsideOut Literary arts Project. They’ve spent years preparing for this opportunity.

Detroit’s team placed fourth in the world at the 2011 competition. Last year the team wasn’t able to attend because they didn’t have enough money.

One of the young poets on the 2011 team was Joseph Verge. He recently stopped by the WDET studio and told us how InsideOut and Brave New Voices helped him grow personally and creatively.

This feature was produced by WDET’s Laura Weber-Davis. WDET is partnering with Insid-Out to send this year’s Detroit poetry slam team to the Brave New Voices competition in Chicago.

The Brave New Voices series is part of WDET's Summer of Kids. Learn how you can support the Detroit team and create new opportunities for local youth at wdet.org/kids.
